1% Daily Growth: 10 Proven Strategies You Can Start Today for Lasting Improvement 🧗🏽‍♀️

Remember that very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all in yourself, in your way of thinking.
— Marcus Aurelius

In our racing modern world, where demands seem never-ending and stress is a constant companion, the concept of feeling just 1% better may seem insignificant at first glance. However, when we delve deeper, we realize that even the smallest improvement can have a profound impact on our overall well-being.

Each 1% improvement, when accumulated over time, can lead to significant positive changes in our lives.

In this post, we'll explore ten simple strategies that can help you achieve that 1% improvement and bring more positivity into your life. But before we explore these strategies, let's take a moment to reflect on why even a 1% improvement can make a significant difference in our well-being.

Why Feeling 1% Better Matters 🧗🏽‍♀️

Human beings are wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain, a fundamental aspect of our survival instinct. Yet, in today's society, where convenience and instant gratification reign supreme, we often overlook the importance of patience, resilience, and the value of small, consistent efforts and rewards!

From ordering food with a few taps on our smartphones to instant access to entertainment and information, we've become accustomed to quick fixes and instant gratification. While these conveniences certainly make our lives easier, they also lead to a tendency to prioritize immediate results over long-term well-being, which can leave us feeling depleted, feeling like we are “failing” and disconnected from ourselves.

By embracing the concept of feeling 1% better, we shift our focus from chasing perfection to recognizing the power of incremental progress.

It's about acknowledging that even on our toughest days, there are small steps we can take to improve our mood, mindset, and overall outlook on life. Whether it's choosing a healthy snack, taking a moment to connect with nature, or reaching out to a supportive friend, each action brings us closer to a greater sense of well-being.

Small Things Are No Small Thing 🪷

Ultimately, feeling 1% better is not just about alleviating temporary discomfort; it's about cultivating resilience, self-care, and a deeper connection to ourselves. It's about honoring the journey of personal growth and recognizing that every small step forward, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is important.

So, let's embrace the power of incremental improvement and commit to prioritizing our well-being, 1% at a time.

My Personal Journey 🧭

Due to some big life changes, health challenges, and uncertainties, for many years my resilience and well-being were tested and I felt I didn’t know or couldn’t put myself out of it. There were moments of frustration, doubt, pain, and exhaustion as I navigated the complexities of managing my health and responsibilities while striving to live a fulfilling and happy life.

Amidst the struggles, I embraced the power of simple practices that helped me feel 1% better each day.

Relaxing warm baths, gentle walks in nature, and moments of stillness allowed me to find solace and peace on stressful days. Cuddling with my cats and savoring my favorite tea became cherished rituals, providing comfort and joy in moments of need. These small acts of self-care not only provided temporary relief from pain and emotional turmoil but also allowed me to reconnect with myself on a deeper level. To regroup, replan, and come back stronger!

It's essential to acknowledge that life isn't always easy, and challenges will inevitably arise.

However, by seeking out moments of positivity and acknowledging the beauty that exists alongside our struggles, we can cultivate resilience and strength. It's about finding a balance between honoring our difficulties while also embracing the moments of joy and beauty that life has to offer. Through self-care, presence, and gratitude, we can navigate life's challenges with grace and resilience, one small step at a time.

Focus on the step in front of you, not the whole staircase.

After a few (long) years of trial and error, I've come to believe that perhaps true healing isn't about finding a quick fix or a miracle cure. It's about embracing the small, everyday actions, and “wins” that can make a meaningful difference in how we feel and navigate life's challenges.

Today I feel called to share with you some of the things that helped me go through tough times, giving me support, comfort, and the chance to unplug and regroup, coming back with more energy and clarity.

rest

1.    Give Permission to Yourself to Take a Break 🛑

Allow yourself to rest, reset, and recharge. In whatever form suits you best. Maybe put aside all of your “to-do’s” and permit yourself to truly and only take a break. We are not machines or robots, we can’t perform 24/7. It can be an afternoon, a day, a weekend, a week, a month, a sabbatical year, whatever it is, allow yourself to go out of the racing wheel and take care of yourself. Make time to rest and relax. For me, taking a couple of hours in the evening to relax and watch my favorite series (currently, The Rookie!) works wonders. If it’s a weekend, I try to do all the essential tasks and commitments on Saturday and then take Sunday off. It's literally on my calendar (with some exceptions) “Sundays RRR”, where RRR stands for rest, reset, and recharge.

2.   Indulge in Homemade Comfort Food 🥞

Prepare and eat your favorite food or snack. Personally, that often means gluten-free pancakes with cinnamon, maple syrup, and half a banana in slices. And, of course, my favorite tea (currently rooibos). When stress hits, our instinct may be to reach for over-processed comfort foods (it is easier and so tempting!). But instead of indulging in sugary treats or salty snacks, opt for a homemade delicious, and nutritious option! Something that is both comforting and nourishing for your body and mind. When we eat well, our bodies are better equipped to handle stress and maintain stable energy levels throughout the day. Think about your favorite treat and incorporate nutrient-rich snacks like berries, nuts, or honey to provide a boost of energy and improve your mood.

3.    Nature Walks & Presence 🌳

Go for a walk in the forest or park nearby. Walk mindfully, smell, and touch the trees, flowers, and stones. As you walk, pay attention to the sensations in your body – the rhythmic beat of your heart, the steady rhythm of your breath. Notice how your muscles relax with each step, releasing tension and stress. Engaging your senses with nature is a powerful way to lift your spirits, reduce stress, and gain perspective. Take a moment to step outside and breathe in the fresh air. Notice the gentle rustle of leaves, the vibrant colors of wildflowers, and the earthy scent of the forest floor. Physical activity is not only good for your body but also your mind. Taking just a few minutes to go for a walk can help release tension, improve circulation, and boost your mood.

4.    Spend Quality Time with Loved Ones (& Hugs) 🫂

It can be your partner, a friend, a family member, or a pet—someone you love and who loves you back. Oftentimes, a good hug goes a long way. When life gets tough, don't hesitate to reach out for support. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with someone you trust can provide comfort and reassurance during difficult times. If you're alone or your loved ones are physically distant, utilize technology to bridge the gap. Make a videocall to see and hear each other, fostering connection and closeness. You can even engage in simple activities together, like wine tasting or cooking a new recipe, despite being apart! Find ways to connect more.

5.    Simplify Your To-Do List & Tackle Tiny Simple Tasks ✅

I get it. We are all super busy and there is so much to be done in so little time. Everything seems so important and urgent. Everyone out there seems to be able to handle it. Why are we falling behind? Well, probably we aren’t. When you're feeling low on energy, not at your best self, or simply having a rough day, it's crucial (more than ever) to prioritize simple tasks that won't drain you further. Rather than overwhelming yourself with a long list of tasks, choose one or two small, achievable goals to focus on for the day. Whether it's completing a minor household chore (instead of cleaning the entire house), or taking a short walk around the block (instead of going on a full-day hike), these small victories can boost your mood and provide a sense of accomplishment.

Start your day with a brief energy assessment by asking yourself, "From 1-10, how much energy do I have today?", "From 1-10, how do I feel today?", “From 1-10, how important/essential are these to-do’s on my list/calendar?”, “What does my body and mind need most today?”. Once you've assessed your energy levels, prioritize your tasks accordingly.

6.    Soak in a Warm Bath 🛁

Submerging yourself in warm water infused with Epsom salt can alleviate muscle pain, promote relaxation, and stimulate the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone." This soothing experience mirrors the comforting sensation of being in the womb, offering a profound sense of relaxation and comfort. Enhance your bath time ritual by preparing a small snack or drink, such as strawberries and a cup of herbal tea, to enjoy while you soak. Set the ambiance with dimmed lights, your favorite playlist (perhaps Hans Zimmer's best hits!), and indulge in a nourishing facial mask. Prioritizing this moment of self-pampering not only reduces stress but also fosters a deeper sense of relaxation and self-love. You deserve it, and I promise you'll feel more than 1% better afterward.

7.    Laugh Your Heart Out 😂

Try Laugh Yoga! Laughter truly is the best medicine. Whether it's a funny movie, a stand-up special, a funny YouTube video, or a laugh yoga session (really, give it a try!) take some time to indulge in a good laugh. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals, which can help reduce stress and improve your mood. 8.    Plan a Mini-Adventure 🚀

Take the initiative to plan a mini-adventure or something else that ignites your excitement. When we find ourselves feeling bored or trapped in the monotony of our routines, injecting a sense of adventure can breathe new life into our days. Consider what activities or destinations spark joy within you. Whether it's exploring a nearby hiking trail, trying out a new hobby, or visiting a quaint cafe you've been eyeing, make concrete plans and integrate them into your schedule. By taking this proactive step, you not only infuse your life with excitement but also manifest your desires into reality. Embrace the thrill of anticipation as you prepare for your mini-adventure, knowing that each step brings you closer to experiencing something wonderful.

9.    Do something Creative and Spontaneous 🎨

Whatever it is, pick something new (and fun!) and give it a try, without expecting any particular outcome. Perhaps it's experimenting with a new recipe or treating yourself to a blue-themed mani-pedi! You might mend that broken lamp, write a blog post, or send a postcard to a faraway friend. Find inspiration and joy in the unexpected! We all have hidden talents and remember, play is just as important as productivity!

10.   Change Your Bed Linens & Take a Nap 💤

Indulge in the simple pleasure of changing into fresh bed linens and slipping into your favorite pajamas. Take a nap (usually 15-30 minutes works wonders) and wake up feeling relaxed, refreshed, and ready to conquer the day!

Research shows that clean bedding improves your sleep. A 2012 study by the US National Sleep Foundation found that 73% of us sleep better on fresh sheets. (And also that our romantic lives improve.)

And if nothing else works…BREATH. And DRINK TEA. Lots of it.

The journey of feeling 1% better each day isn't about finding a quick fix or a miracle cure. It's about embracing the small, everyday practices that nourish our mind, body, and soul. From choosing nutritious snacks to indulging in moments of laughter and relaxation, each of these simple strategies has the power to uplift our spirits and bring more positivity into our lives.

By incorporating these practices into our daily routines, we can cultivate a greater sense of well-being, resilience, and joy. Remember, progress is not always linear, and small actions taken consistently can lead to significant improvements over time. Embrace the power of incremental change and commit to prioritizing your health and happiness each day. 🌻
